BB Governor's thrust on CSR

FE Report | Friday, 27 February 2009

Bangladesh Bank Governor Salehuddin Ahmed Thursday called on all segments of the private sector entrepreneurs in the country to devote more to CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives in a view to lessen the load of social welfare on the government sector.

"For a poor country like ours, the government alone cannot take the mammoth responsibility of social well-being," he said at the scholarship awarding ceremony of Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL) at a city hotel.

"Therefore, the responsibility lies upon the private sector entrepreneurs to share the load of social responsibility with the government in a bid to advance the nation," Dr Salehuddin said.

"Although, it is highly appreciated that over the last three or four years, lots of banks and other financial institutions in the country have come forward in that manner; the same should happen to all other segments of private sector as well," the BB Governor said.

Underlining the need to support the poverty ridden and disadvantaged segment of young students, the central bank Governor said, "Over the last few years, a notable gap has been created between the rural and the urban areas when it comes to the easy availability of good quality education".

"Such a scenario is unacceptable given that the majority of our populace lives in the rural areas and now the children from the remote villages are apparently getting deprived of quality education," Dr Salehuddin said.

"At the same time, children with physical impairment must also get particular preference," he added.

Earlier, the central bank Governor distributed scholarships among the selected students.

"Over the last five years, around 1900 students have been granted scholarships under our CSR programme and the amount of money granted per student is likely to be increased in the near future," Managing Director of DBBL Yasin Ali informed.

Additional Managing Director of DBBL AHM Nazmul Quadir and Coordinator of Dutch-Bangla Bank Foundation Mozammel Hossain Khan also spoke on the occasion.

A total of 100 students; among them 78 coming from rural areas and 10 physically disabled, were awarded scholarship in the ceremony.

The students, who passed their SSC examination in 2008, would receive scholarship for their full academic period including Tk. 1000.00 monthly and an additional Tk. 2,500.00 annually throughout the HSC level.
