BB suspends order seeking accounts info of 198 persons

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) has suspended its order seeking information of bank accounts and the financial statements of 198 individuals including high profile political leaders from the commercial banks.
It gave no reason for suspension of the order.
"We have temporarily suspended our order for providing information about the bank accounts details of the individuals," a BB senior official told the FE Saturday. But the official could not explain the reason for such a move.
The central bank has already communicated its suspension order to the banks through e-mail, sources in the central bank said.
The BB in an order on August 1 asked all banks to submit information about the bank accounts and the financial statements of 198 individuals by August 8.
The central bank sent the list of the persons to the commercial banks asking the authorities concerned to provide such information within the stipulated timeframe.
The leaders include Awami League (AL) general secretary Abdul Jalil, AL presidium member Tofail Ahmed, Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddique, Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mazanur Rahman Minu, Khulana City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman, BNP senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman and AL president Sheikh Hasina's son Sajib Wazed Joy.
On August 1, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) also asked all commercial banks and non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) to freeze accounts of 20 individuals including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her close relations, and three organisations.
The NBR asked all scheduled banks and NBFIs to freeze the accounts as per clause 4 of section 117 of Income Tax Ordinance 1984.
Besides, the central intelligence cell (CIC) of the NBR has asked the commercial banks and NBFIs to provide information about bank accounts of 30 individuals including Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and her close relations and former foreign minister M Morshed Khan and three organisations.
