Bangladesh Bank (BB) will release 500 million pieces of new one taka coin in a move to make transaction easier for the people, officials said.
The supply of the coin will start from the third week of this month and it is expected to ease the sufferings of the people facing in their day-to-day transactions, sources at the Bangladesh Bank (BB) said.
Public sufferings have mounted to a great extent as they are regularly forced to receive chocolate or other things equivalent to the same value during retail purchases due to lack of adequate supply of one taka coin.
There are also occasions when people give up claims for small change.
Central bank officials said the first consignment of 12.88 million pieces of the coin will arrive at Chittagong port June 12. A feeder vessel of Maersk Line is carrying the shipment.
"We'll send the first consignment to Khulna after receiving it at Chittagong port," said an official at the Bank's currency department.
The second consignment is expected to arrive at Chittagong port June 26, which will be sent to Barisal.
Officials said this is going to be the largest single time supply of such coin in the market.
Taka one coin is being supplied after more than one decade as its production cost is higher than its value.
