Bangladesh Bank (BB) will keep an eye on the banks' corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme for the benefit of the society, the BB Governor said Monday.
"BB will watch the CSR programme of the banks through regular reporting and consider the issue while ranking the position of the banks," BB Governor Atiur Rahman said.
He called on the corporate bodies to extend their financial support especially in the field of education mentioning that there was scarcity of opportunity.
"If our graduates were provided with modern laboratory, technology, training and other research facilities, they would surely compete with the other countries' graduates," the governor said.
He was speaking at a fellowship distribution ceremony organised by Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL) in the city.
DBBL awarded fellowships to 30 scholars conducting research in different fields of social, biological, medical, agricultural, engineering and natural sciences for pursuing M.Phil, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees.
He said with this fellowship the researchers would get encouragement in pursuing higher education within the country and contributing to the society.
The BB governor advised the scholarship recipients to blend their research works with business and industry for economic development of the country.
He, however, stressed the need for providing more and more scholarships to students of different areas, including agriculture, science, technology and commerce.
Each fellowship recipient will get Tk 5000 per month for the entire period of his/her study/research.
Chairman of the DBBL Executive Committee Sayem Ahmed, Managing Director Yeasin Ali, Deputy Managing Director (Operation) KS Tabrez and Deputy Managing Director (Administration) Abul Kashem Md Shirin, among others, were present on the occasion.
