Our Correspondent
BRAHMANBARIA, July 19: The cottage industry producing handicraft items in the district is on the verge of extinction due to abnormal hike in the prices of raw materials. The local artisans are finding it increasingly difficult to continue their trade. Many among them have abandoned their age-old profession.
Talking to this correspondent, artisans of Haldarpara area in Brahmanbaria town said that once, theirs was a lucrative business. But now, they have been passing their days in abject poverty.
The items they produce are handkerchief, blouse, saree, punjabi, mat, wall-mat, screen, cradle, jute-shika, hand fan, carpet, pillow, cap, etc. These had great demand in the market and their earning was satisfactory. But now the situation has changed and they were failing to produce quality handicraft items due to lack of working capital and necessary marketing facilities.
In these circumstances, the artisans have sought direct government intervention so that they can once again see better days.
