BCB names 14-member squad for two tests against SA

Wednesday, 20 February 2008

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) named Tuesday a 14-member Bangladesh squad for the ensuing two-match Warid Test Series against visiting South Africa, reports UNB.
The first test of the series will be held on February 22-26 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium at Mirpur, Dhaka, and the 2nd on Feb 29-March 4 at the Bir Shreshtho Shaheed Ruhul Amin Stadium in Chittagong.
Experienced spinner Mohammad Rafique, who will retire from international cricket after the home series against the Proteas, found his place in the squad. Young spinner Enamul Haque Jr, Farhad Reza and pacer Syed Rasel, who were members of Bangladesh squad in the New Zealand tour, have been excluded from the side.
BCB chief selector Rafiqul Alam announced the test squad at a press conference at the Narayanganj Osmani Stadium today. Selector Akram Khan was also present.
Asked the reason for inclusion of spinner Abdur Razzak Raj, Rafiqul Alam said: "Razzak's performance in the international arena was good and he can also bat well."
About the omission of Syed Rasel, the chief selector said he is not properly fit and has been dropped due to injury.
Replying to a question about the inclusion of young pacer Sajedul Islam, he said Sajedul performed well recently, especially with the old ball. "We think him an appropriate bowler for the test."
Asked who will open the innings with three openers -- Shahriar Nafees, Tamim Iqbal and Zunaid Siddiqui -- in the side, Rafiqul Alam said: "To know this, we have to wait until the morning of the first test."
Test squad: Mohammad Ashraful (captain), Mashrafe Bin Mortaza (vice-captain), Habibul Bashar, Mohammad Rafique, Rajin Saleh, Aftab Ahmed, Abdur Razzak, Mushfiqur Rahim (wicket-keeper), Kazi Shahadat Hossain, Shahriar Nafees, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Zunaid Siddiqui and Sajedul Islam.
