BCL activists beat up DU reporter

DU Correspondent | Thursday, 14 August 2008

Several unruly activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) assaulted Dhaka University (DU) reporter of the Dainik Desh Janata Shafiqul Islam over a very trifling matter on the campus Wednesday.

Injured Islam was admitted to the DU medical centre with a burn injury in his left hand.

Islam and eyewitnesses said a group of 10 to 12 BCL unruly activists led by Mithu, Rayhan, Mehedi and Jewel of the Jahurul Haque Hall swooped on Islam when he was covering a rally of the BCL at noon.

The BCL activists beat him and pushed a burning cigarette on his hand as he asked them to smoke outside the rally.

DU Journalists' Association (DUJA) after an urgent general meeting Wednesday demanded permanent expulsion of the BCL activists involved in the attack on the DU reporter by 2:00 pm today (Thursday). Otherwise, the association threatened to boycott all positive news of the BCL.

The DUJA will also submit a memorandum to the DU vice-chancellor today demanding expulsion of the unruly BCL activists academically within the next seven days.

On the other hand, the BCL activists beat up two students of the Jahurul Haque Hall Tuesday night and another one of the Jasim Uddin Hall Wednesday for their involvement with the Islami Chhatra Shibir.
