The gates of five academic buildings of the Dhaka University (DU) were found locked with chains on early Wednesday. Later, Leaders of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) admitted on Facebook to locking the gates. After this incident, five security guards of the DU, assigned to the buildings, were temporarily suspended.
The suspended guards were Shah Alam and Md. Selim of the Institute of Education and Research (IER), Shafiqul Islam of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science (INFS), Ali Ahmed of the Curzon Hall, and Sangram Hossain of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
According to the university sources, locks were placed on the back gate of the IER, the gate of the INFS, the middle gate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, the High Court-adjacent gate of the Curzon Hall, and the gate in front of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Chains were used to lock the gates, and sheets of paper reading "Lockdown BSL" were pasted on them.
After the incident, DU BCL President Mazharul Kabir Shayon shared photos of the locked buildings on his Facebook page, writing: "Make the lockdown successful throughout the 13th. Lockdown BSL - Faculty of Fine Arts, Institute of Education and Research (IER), Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Curzon Hall Gate, Science Building, University of Dhaka."
Normally, the gates of the academic buildings remain closed at night with security guards on duty. The back gate of the IER has long remained shut, while the middle gate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, and the High Court-side gate of Curzon Hall are occasionally opened.
DU Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed said, "The guards, who were on duty, at those gates have been temporarily suspended. Our assistant proctors have visited the sites, and we are checking whether CCTV footage is available or not. No one will be spared for such acts.
The matter is under investigation."
Meanwhile, DUCSU Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday that he along with the students would gather at the DUCSU field on Wednesday and Thursday "to root out the banned and expelled Chhatra League terrorists and eliminate fascist forces from the campus."
He also called on all the DU students to unite and resist "the anti-student and anti-national miscreants of Awami League."
