BCL cadres beat RU teacher

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Dec 30: The cadres of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) beat a teacher of the Folklore Department of Rajshahi University (RU) Wednesday as the teacher tried to prevent them from realising toll from a first year admission seeker.
Protesting the incident, the teachers and students of the department called an indefinite strike on the campus.
According to sources, a group of BCL cadres led by Emdadul Haque Emdad, a final year student of the Management Department, beat Dr Anupam Hira Mondal at around 3pm.
The sources said, Emdad snatched away academic transcripts, admission form and mobile phone from Himani Bishwas, a first year admission-seeker of the Management Department and a relative of the teacher, and demanded Tk 30000 for return of the transcripts and other items at around 2pm at the university Kazla Gate.
Hearing this, the teacher went to the spot and protested the matter. At one stage the cadres assaulted him physically, witnesses said.
Later the students who were present on the spot stopped the cadres and handed them over to law enforcers.
Following the incident, the academic committee of the department in an emergency meeting decided to boycott classes and examinations for an indefinite period if the enrolment of the students responsible were not cancelled.
Later, the committee sent a memorandum to the university vice-chancellor (VC) and threatened to launce indefinite strike on the campus.
The committee also urged the Rajshahi University Teachers' Association (RUTA) to observe indefinite strike on the campus protesting against the incident.
Chairman of the Folklore Department Prof Shahidur Rahman told the newsmen that they took the decision to boycott all academic activities of the department until the cadres were meted out with due punishment.
"We also called strike for an indefinite period on the campus from today (Thursday) protesting the incident", he added.
While contacted, Emdadul Haque admitted the incident of snatching away the academic transcripts of the student but denied the allegation of assaulting the teacher.
RU VC Prof Abdus Sobhan said he would take legal step in this connection immediately.
