BCL calls strike at CU after death of activist

CHITTAGONG, Apr 16: Bangladesh Chhatra League has called an indefinite strike at the Chittagong University following the death of one of its activists in a factional clash Friday.
Hathazari police said Md Asaduzzaman died at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital at around 5.00 pm. He was one of those admitted to hospital after being injured in an attack earlier on the day.
Police said five persons were arrested from the spot, reportedly associated with the BCL politics. They are Zahidul Islam, Akhtarul Huq, Russel Barua, Shantanu Mohajan and Mamun. They were produced before court before they were sent to jail.
Five persons were injured in the attack, all activists BCL, police said.
Following the death, the BCL activists staged demonstration in front of the hospital, where Ershad Hussain, general secretary of the BCL's CU unit, called the strike.
The police quoting Asaduzzaman's associates said that a group of youths had attacked them, when they were engaged in conversation in a village adjacent to the university in the morning.
