BCL denies involvement in SUST violence

Saturday, 22 November 2014

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) president HM Bodiuzzaman Shohag ruled out involvement of his organisation in the Sylhet clash that left one of its activist dead, reports bdnews24.com.
"There were no clashes between Chhatra League factions of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Outsiders clashed on the campus. Some media are heinously trying to blame Chhatra League for it," he told a media briefing Friday at Dhaka University (DU).
Suman Das, student of a private university in Sylhet, was shot during Thursday's clash. He later died at the hospital.
"Suman (Das) was never involved with BCL. He was not a student of Shahjalal University. I also have the same question like you, why did he go to the campus that day," the BCL chief said in his written speech.
"In a university, students of that institution will only take part in its political activities. Why should outsiders come on the campus? And why should be Chhatra League blamed for it?"
He blamed expelled BCL activist Uttam Kumar for Thursday's clash. "Uttam Kumar was ousted over the 2013 incident of hacking Chhatra League's former convener Shamsuzzaman Chowdhury. A case has been filed against him over the assault. But neither the police nor the university authorities took any steps against him."
BCL will not take responsibility for any misdeed of Uttam Kumar, added Shohag. "We will take measures against those BCL activists involved in the clash."
UNB adds from Sylhet : Police arrested 17 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in connection with Thursday's factional clash at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
Two of the arrestees were identified as Anik and Khokon while the identities of the others could not be known.
Akhtar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jalalabad Police Station, said a team of police and detectives conducted separate drives in different areas in the city, including Kuarper and Pathantula and arrested the 17 BCL men Thursday night.
