A faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) are blocking the way of commuters to the Chittagong University (CU) following a clash with a rival group. They besieged the Sholosharar Railway Station area on Monday morning, halting CU-bound shuttle trains, and blocked city bus stops used by university teachers and students. Saiful Islam Rasel, a former assistant secretary of the BCL’s now-dissolved committee, was beaten up at the university campus on Sunday night by rivals within the ruling party’s student wing. Mithun Chowdhury, a computer science student was also thrashed. The incident prompted irate BCL activists to prevent students from taking the 9:00pm train to the campus on Sunday night, Government Railway Police (GRP) OC Yasin Faruk and sources at the BCL said. ‘They’ve also been blocking the movement of buses that carry teachers and others to the campus.’ CU Assistant Proctor, Ziaur Rahman Soheil said no bus arrived on campus on Monday morning. The BCL faction has threatened to persist with the agitation until the authorities met their 6-point charter of demands. They want the attackers expelled and arrested, according to bdnews24.com.
