RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, July 18: The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) unit put today (Sunday) the administrative building and five dormitories under lock and key to press home its seven-point demand.
They also started boycotting all classes and examinations at the same time on the same issue.
Sources said the BCL placed its seven-point demand to RUET Vice Chancellor Prof. Sirajul Karim Chowdury on July 14 and gave an ultimatum to fulfill its demand within 48 hours.
The BCL demands include: Constructing a female dormitory after the name of Sheikh Hasina, expulsion of BNP-backed engineering faculty dean Prof. Shamim Akhtar, ban on Bangladesh Chhatra Shibir (ICS) politics on the campus, trial of the motor workers and police who attacked RUET students on January 29, trial of RUET ICS activists that were involved in BCL leader killing at RU campus on February 8, expulsion of two provosts of Shaheed Shahidul Islam Hall and Shaheed Abdul Hamid Hall and resignation of head of the Electric Engineering Department.
Getting no responses from the authorities concerned, the agitated BCL leaders and activists went on action on the day.
No student could attend any classes and take examinations due to BCL action and even no transports could leave the campus.
Later the agitating BCL leaders and activists brought out a procession on the campus and laid siege to VC office until noon.
Meanwhile, RUET Student Adviser Prof. Ashraful Alam told newsmen that the BCL demands were not possible to fulfill instantly. These may be discussed in the next executive committee meeting, he added.
