Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has suspended all activities of its Eden Mohila College unit and expelled 16 leaders of the unit permanently over a factional clash that took place on Sunday night.
The decision of the BCL was announced in a press release issued on Monday by BCL president Al Nahiyan Khan Joy and general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharya.
All the expelled leaders protested against Eden College President Tamanna Jesmin Riva and its general secretary Razia Sultana over their involvement in seat trading, extortion, torturing of students, control of college hostels and canteens and other unethical activities.
As the BCL central committee didn't take any action against Riva and Sultana, the expelled leaders went to the Awami League (AL) party office in Dhanmondi on Monday and began a fast-unto-death programme.
However, one hour later, they withdrew their programme and left the office.
At that time, they declined to give any statement to the media, saying that they withdrew the strike and all other programmes.
On Thursday, BCL Eden College unit vice-president Jannatul Ferdous gave an interview to the media, levelling allegations of various irregularities such as extortion, seat trading and occupation of hall against Eden College BCL president and general secretary.
On Saturday, Jannatul Ferdous came under attack allegedly by the followers of Riva and Sultana. On Sunday, 25 BCL leaders organised a press conference in protest against the attack.
On Sunday night, they brought out a procession demanding expulsion of Riva and Sultana. On the day, at least 15 activists were injured in a factional clash on the college campus.
BCL central president Al Nahean Khan Joy and general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharya could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts.
College principal Supriya Bhattacharya also could not be reached for comments.
