BD asks Myanmar to stop firing: BGB DG visits Myanmar Jun 9-14

As tension escalated along Bangladesh-Myanmar border following the firing of gunshots by Myanmar border guard police, Bangladesh on Saturday asked Myanmar to stop the gunfire and take immediate measures for identification of the dead body that could be of Naik M Mizanur Rahman who remains missing. Bangladesh summoned Myanmar’s Ambassador in Dhaka Myo Myint Than for the second time on Saturday since May 28 and handed over a note verbale strongly protesting the unprovoked eruption of gunfire from the Myanmar border force along the Bangladesh-Myanmar international border on Friday afternoon. The Myanmar envoy was also told that despite the recent border incidents, the Bangladesh government in the spirit of good neighborly relations has strongly encouraged the visit of the BGB DG and his delegation to Myanmar from June 9-14. Bangladesh thinks it would be a good opportunity to discuss all the related issues at length in order to ensure peace and stability in the bordering areas between the two friendly countries. The Myanmar Ambassador was further reminded that Bangladesh was looking forward to the forthcoming Foreign Office Consultations in Dhaka scheduled for 18 June 2014. Meanwhile, a Myanmar border guard police officer has said that after the clash, both Bangladesh and Myanmar have had ongoing negotiations and there is no problem. At the meeting in Bangladesh, Secretary (Bilateral) Mustafa Kamal demanded a thorough investigation into the unprovoked recurrence of gunfire on May 30 and for abstaining from the same in the future, according to a news agency.
