BD-CERN cooperation
Sunday, 14 December 2014
Bangladesh has signed an agreement for cooperation with the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, CERN. This will benefit universities, researchers and professionals. Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative in Geneva M Shameem Ahsan signed the ‘instrument of cooperation’ with CERN Director General Dr Rolf Heuer in Geneva, says the foreign ministry. The move, it believes, is ‘a major step’ towards advancement of science and technology research in Bangladesh. CERN runs world’s largest laboratory in fundamental and quantum physics in Geneva. Its inventions and discoveries play a major role in the fight against deadly diseases like cancer. Recent discovery of Higg’s Boson - the ‘God particle’-- drew global attention. For countries like Bangladesh, it provides the opportunity for much needed technology transfer, education and training for researchers, scholars, academics and students. It also offers programmes for students and researchers from developing countries -- internship, summer and other specialised schools that are open to all, according to a news agency.
