FE REport | Monday, 21 April 2014

Official level meeting of Bangladesh and India begins in Dhaka today (Monday) for enhancement of cooperation in railway and connectivity between the two neighbouring countries.
Observers said since the launching of Maitree Express to reestablish railway passenger service between Dhaka and Kolkata in 2008 after 40 years of suspension, the railway authorities of the two sides could not make any headway.
Except some changes in time schedule of the Maitree Express, second Maitree train or other goods and freight services were not introduced, they added.
Bangladesh Railway officials said the three-day annual meeting at Additional Secretary-level will discuss various aspects of train services operating between India and Bangladesh.
They said this year issues of on-board luggage checking at home and destination points of Maitree express and freight train connectivity between Birol of Bangladesh and Radhikapur of India would come up for discussion.
The inter-governmental railway meeting (IGRM) is being held since 2007 where representation from the ministries of home, foreign and national board of revenue is ensured to make it more fruitful.
