Saturday, 22 February 2014

After a long three-year negotiation, Bangladesh Embassy in Brussels has got a place in a public park close to Bangladesh Embassy for building a memorial for the language movement martyrs. The Mayor of Ixelles of Brussels confirmed the place on Thursday, said a Foreign Ministry media release issued on Friday night. Bangladesh Ambassador to Belgium and Head of Mission to the European Union Ismat Jahan has been vigorously pursuing the matter for the last three years with the Mayor and the Board of Alderman. She convinced the authority saying that the world celebrates International Mother Language Day on February 21 and Bangladesh was not seeking for a memorial for Bangladesh’s language martyrs only, it is most befitting that there would be a  memorial for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause of mother language in Brussels, the capital of Europe, according to UNB.
