BD-Myanmar meet in Ctg

CHITTAGONG, Jan 08: The two-day high level meeting on the demarcation of the maritime boundary between Bangladesh and Myanmar has begun here today (Friday).
Leaders of both the teams said they are hopeful about a positive outcome of the meeting. "We are hopeful about reaching a fruitful solution as we will have further negotiations tomorrow," said Bangladesh delegation leader rear admiral (retired) Khorshed Alam this afternoon.
The Myanmar delegation said they would be able to solve the issue.
The two-day high level meeting to demarcate the maritime boundary between Bangladesh and Myanmar started at 9.30 am at Hotel Agrabad in the city.
Thirteen representatives each from both sides took part in the meeting. Deputy foreign minister U Mong Mint led the visiting delegation while additional foreign secretary rear admiral (retired) Khorshed Alam led the Bangladesh side in the meeting.
The last meeting on the two bordering states over maritime boundary was held at Myanmar when Bangladesh protested a move by the Myanmar government which tried to extract mineral resources from Bangladesh territorial waters in the Bay of Bengal the tenure of last caretaker government.
Bangladesh lodged formal complaints with the UN arbitration tribunal over the demarcation of the maritime boundary last October.
Bangladesh delegation leader Khorshed Alam said, his side has proposed the demarcation of the maritime boundary on the basis of the Principles of Equity. Myanmar delegation wanted the demarcation on the basis of equal distance.
