French journalist and freedom fighter (FF) Bernard Henri Levy said Saturday Bangladesh has attained the status of a modern, democratic country in the world, reports UNB.
Mr Levy made the observation when he called on Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganobhaban.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, PM's special assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil said journalist Levy mentioned that taking part in the Liberation War of Bangladesh was the greatest chapter in his life.
The French journalist, who was a member of the International Brigade, said it was unprecedented the way Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had rebuilt the war ravaged country in just three and a half years.
"The name of Bangabandhu will be written in the history with red letters as the best Independent Fighter," he said.
After independence of the country, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman appointed Levy in the Finance and Planning Ministry of Bangladesh.
Recalling his various experiences during the Liberation War in an emotion-choked voice, the French FF told the PM that during the Liberation War he had met Sheikh Jamal, son of Bangabandhu and brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina said Bangabandhu is the pride of the nation. "My only duty is to make the country a hunger and poverty free Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Bangabandhu."
