BD observes World Egg Day today amid low per capita intake

Bangladesh will observe the "World Egg Day" today (Friday) aiming to fight against malnutrition, hunger and poverty amid low per capita egg intake in the country.
The per capita egg intake is only 35 pieces in Bangladesh against 102 pieces, recommended by the Food and Agriculture Oraganisation (FAO) of the United Nations, experts said.
Poultry industry insiders said the Egg Day is very significant for the developing nations especially for Bangladesh where hundreds of thousands children and pregnant women are dying for nutrition deficiencies.
The Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee (BPICC), an apex trade body of seven poultry related associations, has urged people to double the egg intake for avoiding malnutrition and making a healthy nation.
The apex trade body has also urged the government and the school authorities to provide students boiled eggs at least thrice a week.   
Moshiur Rahman, Convenor of the BPICC said the eggs would play a vital role to eliminate malnutrition and poverty from Bangladesh.
Taher Ahmed Siddique, President of the Egg Producers Association of Bangladesh (EPAB), said that the parents should provide safest and high nutrient food egg avoiding the oily food in the tiffin for their babies in the school.
Fazle Rahim Khan Shahriar, President of the Breeders Association of Bangladesh (BAB) said there should be countrywide campaign for eggs. "Our motto is to produce enough eggs to feed our people at a minimum cost and thereby eliminate malnutrition."
Rafiqul Haque, Secretary of the World's Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh Branch (WPSA-BB) said, "Eggs are one of nature's highest quality sources of protein. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two newly-recognised nutrients that have enriched eggs to a "functional food" category. It can significantly lower risk of age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness affecting people over the age of 65."
"Egg yolk is an excellent source of calorie. Research has shown that calorie to be required for normal formation of brain tissue and memory and to play a role in preventing heart disease," he said.
Momin ud Dowla, President, the Animal Health Companies Association of Bangladesh (AHCAB) said egg with Omega 3 is also available in Bangladeshi market to meet the growing demand of the consumers.
