Bangladesh began their World Hockey League mission in a well manner beating Sri Lanka 3-2 goals in the first round Men’s zonal opening match at Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium Friday, according to a news agency.
Goalkeeper Asim Gope turned the match Bangladesh way as he saved the penalty stroke off Lahiru Weerasooriya at the dead end 70th minute, after facing three penalty corner shots one after another in a span of only one minute.
Sri Lanka tried their best to level the margin by converting the last three PC shots into goal and at last hoped on Lahiru’s PS shot in the last minute of the match.
However, Asim saved his team coolly at the crucial moment.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh coach Naveed Alam said, “Asim overcame the pressure throughout the match. Sri Lanka always play well against Bangladesh and Asim also against Lankan.”
“My team played well but I’m not happy with this result. We should have scored at least 6 to 7 goals,” the coach added.
