BD potential destination of investors in SE Asia region: US spl adviser

CHITTAGONG, June 14: The visiting US special adviser for Bureau of South and Central Asia affairs in Washington Ms Madelyn Spirnak said here today Bangladesh has become a potential destination of investors in the Southeast Asia region due to its strategic geographical location and competitiveness in relevant fields.
She said that Bangladesh has achieved economic growth in the field of business, trade and investment for which the United States is eager to contribute to its socio-economic advancement.
She said this during her visit to the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Monday morning. She exchanged views with the CCCI directors and the port users’ forum chaired by the trade body’s president MA Latif MP.
Collier F Graham, political officer in the US embassy in Dhaka, Shafi Chowdhury of Inland Vessel Owners Association, former member of Chittagong Port Authority captain Amirul Islam and CCCI directors were present on the occasion.
Welcoming the US special adviser in Chittagong Mr Latif said Bangladesh and the US are enjoying a very close bilateral relation based on mutual trust and conviction.
“The US is a very important partner in the socio-economic development of Bangladesh,” he said hoping it will continue its cooperation with this developing country in the days to come.
Latif sought cooperation of Ms Madelyn to exercise her authority in persuading the US administration to offer duty and quota free access of all Bangladeshi products including the readymade garments (RMG) to the US market.
CCCI director Shoyeb Riyad of MEB Group sought US investment in the education and health sectors in Bangladesh.
