BD questions UNFPA report on female RMG worker harassment

Thursday, 11 December 2014

State minister Mujibul Haque Chunnu has rejected a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report that says women workers in Bangladesh readymade garment industry are harassed at workplace. He said that doubt over genuineness of the report ‘remains’ as majority of the workers in RMG sector were female. ‘I know around 85 per cent of the workers in this sector are women. My question is how can 15pc males torture 85 pc females,” the state minister for labour and employment wondered while addressing a programme in the city. The UNFPA report, released on Dec 3 in Dhaka, said 84.70pc female workers in the country’s RMG industry were harassed somehow, according to a news agency.
