BD seeks preferential migration of its citizens to Canada

FE REPORT | Tuesday, 30 January 2024

Dhaka has requested Ottawa for preferential migration for its citizens to Canada.
Foreign minister Dr Hasan Mahmud made the request when Canadian High Commissioner Dr Lilly Nicholls paid a courtesy call on him at the former's office on Monday.
Talking to the media after the meeting, the minister said also requested Canada to send back Nur Chowdhury, a convicted killer of Bangabandhu, to Bangladesh.
"The High Commissioner said she would inform her government of the request," said Mr Mahmud when asked about the response of the envoy.
The minister said the meeting also discussed issues related to the expansion of bilateral trade and the Rohingya crisis.
Asked about the Canadian statement that criticised the January 07 election in Bangladesh, he said the Canadian government was eager to work with the new government.
That is why the Canadian high commissioner paid a courtesy call, argued Mr Mahmud.
"Today, foreign minister Hasan Mahmud and I had a productive first discussion about our countries' multifaceted and longstanding relationship," said Ms Nicholls after the meeting.
"With strong people-to-people ties, a growing commercial relationship and an evolving development programme, there are many areas for potential collaboration, benefiting the citizens of both countries," she added.
"… We also discussed the importance of media freedom, civil society and alternative voices in a healthy democracy, and I reiterated Canada's continued commitment to responding to the Rohingya crisis."
