Despite tremendous success in HSC results this year, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Thursday said Bangladesh is still far away from attaining international standards in terms of qualitative education. ‘Certainly, there has been improvement in the standard of qualitative education but we’re still far off international level,’ he told reporters after a seminar in a city hotel. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Bangladesh (BSMRMU) organised the seminar on ‘Global Maritime Challenges and Role of Maritime Higher Education in Bangladesh’. Addressing the inaugural session of the seminar, Nahid said: ‘We are trying hard to achieve the international (in education). Our key challenge is to improve qualitative standard of education.’ Responding to a question, he said he does not understand what the critics want to say when they claim that standard of education will not be maintained if the pass rate goes up. Talking about the teachers’ standard, he said the standard of teachers and the teaching style needs further improvement. ‘But it won’t happen overnight. We need support from all,’ he added, according to a news agency.
