Monday, 29 November 2010

President M Zillur Rahman said that Bangladesh, as a peace-loving country, is always committed to upholding the international peace and security, reports UNB.
The President made the remark while inaugurating the four-day 16th Annual Conference of International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centres (IAPTC) at a city hotel Sunday.
Defence Adviser to the Prime Minister Maj Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddiqui and Chief of Army Staff General M Abdul Mubeen, among others, also spoke at the function, organised by Bangladesh Army in collaboration with Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT).
Addressing the function, the President mentioned that in conformity with the spirit of the constitution, Bangladesh has always responded positively to the United Nations' call for strengthening world peace and stability.
He said that with professionalism and perseverance, Bangladesh peacekeepers have set an excellent professional mark worldwide and so far, Bangladesh has taken part in 45 peacekeeping missions in 30 different countries.
"Now, we are the highest troops-contributing country in the world. The contributions of our peacekeepers are highly acclaimed globally."
The President said, "Today's peacekeepers are to undertake a wide variety of tasks ranging from maintaining ceasefire to building sustainable institutions for good governance to upholding human rights and rule of law."
He noted that IAPTC was initiated by Canada's Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (PPC) in 1995, with the purpose of broadening contacts amongst various international organisations, peacekeeping training centres and institutions, universities, and other interested groups.
Evidently, Zillur said, it is doing a fine job in turning peacekeeping training more effective and operations more successful and thus the institution has made notable contributions to global peace and stability.
He conveyed sincere appreciation and best wishes to all the members of IAPTC for their endeavours.
Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral ZU Ahmed, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman, high civil and military officials, foreign delegates from member states and different organisations related to international peacekeeping operations were present on the occasion.
