Bangladesh has made important gains in economic freedom scorecards, according to a report released jointly by the US-based Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal, reports UNB.
The report - 2010 Index of Economic Freedom - released on April 15 appreciated Bangladesh's significant increase in its level of
economic freedom and its continued high growth rate over the years defying calamities and exigencies.
For the first time, Bangladesh has graduated from the category described as "repressed" in the Economic Freedom Index.
The report says Bangladesh scored 51.1, a 3.6-point higher score than the previous years, making its economy the 137th in the 2010 index. Bangladesh ranked 29th out of 41 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to the report, Bangladesh's progress was noted in the trade freedom, investment freedom, government spending, freedom from corruption and labour freedom.
The report acknowledged Bangladesh's impressive annual economic growth of around six per cent over the years, driven mainly by its growing services and industrial sectors.
The report, however, suggested some areas like business freedom and monetary freedom where improvements require.
