Bangladesh is a role model for inter-religious and intercultural harmony, as there is no room for religious communalism, fundamentalism and extremism here, said Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid.
The minister said all citizens of the country enjoy equal rights whatever their religion is, adding that it is a constitutional right.
Nahid was addressing the inaugural session of the three-day 2nd international conference on 'Inter-religious and Intercultural Dialogue-2010' at Dhaka University (DU) Senate Bhaban Saturday.
Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU), Centre for Inter-religious and Intercultural Dialogue (CIID) and Department of World Religions and Culture of DU have jointly organised the conference in cooperation with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) regional office in Tehran and UNESCO in Dhaka.
"No religion supports violence. But some culprits use religion as their business that leads people to violence", Religious Affairs State Minister Md Shahjahan Mia said as the guest of honour, stressing inter-religious dialogue for peaceful co-existence across the globe.
Abbas Sadri, director of ISESCO regional office in Tehran, Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, education secretary, and Prof Kazi Nurul Islam, director of CIID, spoke at the opening function with DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
