JOYPURHAT, Aug 6 (UNB): A man was killed as BDR and BSF troops exchanged gunfire at Hatkhola border in Panchbibi Upazila early Monday, a day after a flag meeting held for maintaining peace in the border areas.
The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) sources said troops of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) of Sidai camp fired three rounds of bullet towards the Bangladesh border without any provocation at about 3:02am.
In reply, the BDR personnel also fired eight rounds.
After the exchange of fire, BDR members found a floating body in a ditch near the border this morning. It is suspected that he was killed in the crossfire.
The BDR sources said four Bangladeshi traders went to India through the border Sunday but three of them returned.
It might be the body of the other cattle trader, who did not return with his associates, but the BDR was yet to confirm this, the sources said.
The BDR is on high alert in the face of mounting tension as the BSF sent more troops to the border area.
Earlier, two Bangladeshi citizens were killed by the BSF on Panchbibi border area in the month of July.
Later, the BDR called the BSF for a flag meeting protesting the killings. The BSF promised in the meeting held at Koya border in the upazila Saturday not to fire on any Bangladeshi citizen without any reason.
