BDR carnage probe body reconstituted

Tuesday, 3 March 2009

The government has reconstituted the probe body on BDR mutiny with strong military representation to find out the causes of and culprits involved in the revolt at the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) headquarters, report agencies.

Retired secretary Anisuzzaman Khan replaces Home Minister Sahara Khatun as head of the inquiry committee, which is now enlarged from the previous six-member to an eleven-member one, according to an official announcement Monday.

The new committee draws three members from the Armed Forces Division as well as the newly-appointed BDR chief Brigadier General Mainul Hossain.

"The committee will investigate the background and reasons for the bloody mutiny, and make recommendations on related issues," said a Home Ministry notification. The committee has been asked to submit the inquiry report within seven days.

On the committee are secretary of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, BDR director general, representative from Prime Minister's Office, representative from Cabinet Division, three representatives from the Armed Forces Division (brigadier general-level representative, from the armys Air Force and Navy), additional inspector general of Police (admin), judge advocate general, Dhaka Cantonment, and additional secretary of the Home Ministry.

Joint secretary (political) of the Home Ministry will provide necessary secretarial cooperation, and the committee "may co-opt any officer as member, if necessary," said the notification.

Earlier on Friday, a probe body, headed by Home Minister Sahara Khatun, was formed to investigate the incident.

The changes came after calls that the home minister, being head of the government team in talks with the mutineers, should be removed from the investigation process. State minister for law Quamrul Islam was also dropped from the committee.
