BDR mutiny makes mobile phones inoperative at dictate

Friday, 27 February 2009

All mobile-phone operators have been asked to switch off their networks across the country save the capital, as the BDR mutiny at its headquarters sparked a backlash in many other camps, reports UNB.

In Dhaka also, the handy phones will remain inoperative in the Peelkhana area wherein is located the BDR headquarters besieged by belligerent rebels.

On the other hand, PSTN (Privately Switched Telephone Network), however, remained "out of the directives", sources said.

According to sources, BTRC directed the mobile-phone operators to switch off their operations across the country, excluding Dhaka.

A Grameenphone official said, "Mobile services have been kept off nationwide, except for some areas of the capital."

An unofficial source said that instructions also came from the home ministry for the shutdown of all network communications with the flashpoint, BDR's Peelkhana Headquarters.
