BD,Uzbekistan to sign MoUs to boost trade, investment

Bangladesh and Uzbekistan are set to sign several memorandum of understanding (MoUs) during an expected visit of a Uzbek government delegation to Dhaka by this year, officials said.
They planned the visit following Bangladesh commerce minister Tipu Munshi's visit to Uzbekistan last month when he had meetings with the high-ups of Uzbek government.
"We are expecting that the MoUs on trade and investment between the two countries would be signed during their visit sometimes this year," a joint secretary of the ministry of commerce (MoC) told the FE.
The official, who accompanied with the minister during the Tashkent visit, further said that the Uzbekistan government officials and the businessmen showed their interest to visit Bangladesh for promoting bilateral trade and investment.
Mr. Munshi during his meeting with deputy prime minister of Uzbekistan Elior Ganiev informed that Bangladesh is providing special facilities to the investors.
He said that many countries have started investing in the special economic zones of Bangladesh.
Introduction of Dhaka-Tashkent direct flight, Uzbek investment in readymade garment (RMG), tourism, pharmaceuticals and, information and communication technology sectors are expected to get priority during the upcoming meeting between the two countries, according to the MoC sources.
Meanwhile, the government of Bangladesh has taken initiatives to increase exports to the countries under the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova, Russia and Tajikistan.
Bangladesh could increase export to the Uzbekistan market as there is a huge demand of different Bangladeshi products, including readymade garments, leather and leather products and, Jute and jute products, according to the country's business circle.
Bangladesh has exported goods worth US$ 29.29 million to Uzbekistan while imported goods worth $ 193.60 million in the fiscal year 2017-18.
