THE academic success of students depends on holistic efforts. Studying on one's own, attending classes effectively, getting prepared for the exams-all play vital role. Of these, attending classes regularly and attentively is very important. Any student who attends classes in an effective manner can expect to succeed.
Several reasons can be identified for the irregular attendance and being inattentive in the classes. Of them, thinking like ' I will read later myself', attending classes late, not being aware of the changes in the routine, preparing for a class test to be held later in some other classes, disliking for the lecturer, having not studied for the lecture from home, not brining the text, not reviewing the notes at the end of the class, feeling bored, lack of visualistion are few.
After attending the class- when the lecture continues, many students think that ' I will read the chapter later myself or discuss with my classmates and will understand' and then stop concentrating on the lecture. While the teacher continues to deliver speech, the learner thinks and ponders over something else. Attending the class in this way goes in vain for the learner.
Many students attend classes late. Even being late for one minute may make one feel uncomfortable in the class and one might miss important points or might fail to be on the track. Students need to arrive at the classroom at least 5 minutes before the classes. They must ensure that their cell phones are switched off. They should relax, remain silent and be mentally prepared for the class.
Sometimes instead of listening to the lecture, students secretly study for some class tests to be held later in some other class. Students should really avoid doing this. They should be well prepared for the class test from home so that they do not have to worry about the preparation of the class test in some other classes.
Many, especially at university level, also are not aware of routine very well. They may not know changes in the routine. Students should have updated information so that they are aware of any changes in the routine.
Sometimes the learner's disliking for the teacher also works as hindrance for listening attentively. Students must remove such disliking. In order to remove disliking, they can think in this way: " Every human being has faults and so my teacher has this and that fault. Still, I will be attentive to what he or she says".
In order to listen attentively to the lecture, a learner should have a very resting mind. It is a very challenging matter to make the mind stable. The mind wants to move form one place to another easily. Also some thoughts appear in mind like 'I have to do this and I have to do that' or ' that matters makes me worried'. In such cases, the learners can quickly note those thought or tasks or matter of worries in one corner of the page or in a different page and then again can concentrate on the lecture. The learner should work on those thoughts/matter of worries at his or her convenient so that thoughts/worries do not appear in his or her mind again and again.
In order to make the listening of the lectures interesting, learners must read about the chapters before they come to the class. This will make them mentally prepared for the class.
Also learners need to carry the texts with them so that they can relate teacher's lecture.
In order to get the best from the class, students should revise and review teacher's lecture at least for five minutes at the end of the class. They should not hurriedly leave the classroom. If they can spend around five minutes in reviewing the lecture and with patience, they can remember and organise the notes and can later use them very easily.
When lectures seem boring to the students, they may pretend to enjoy the lecture. This pretension will be helpful for them and they will start enjoying the lecture.
Those who want to get best out of the classroom try to visualise what the teachers is saying. This habit of visualiation forces them listen to the teacher attentively.
It is only through being better prepared and better alert during the lecture, learners can surely get maximum benefit from the classes.
