Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the RAB on Wednesday to further strengthen their efforts against food hoarding and the circulation of counterfeit currencies ahead of Ramadan and Eid, report agencies
She also urged them to take tougher legal action against militancy, terrorism, drug abuse, and teenage gang culture.
"Some of our unscrupulous traders hoard essential commodities during Ramadan and engage in unethical practices to increase prices and make more profit. You must take appropriate measures against them," she stated.
The Prime Minister emphasised that Ramadan is a month of self-restraint and that profiteering goes against the spirit of the holy month.
She made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an event marking the 20th founding anniversary of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at its headquarters.
She highlighted the increase in the circulation of fake currencies before Eid and called for enhanced surveillance to address this issue.
She also expressed concerns about dishonest businessmen who hoard essential items for Ramadan, inflate prices, and engage in deceptive practices.
Furthermore, she discussed the economic progress achieved during the tenure of the Awami League and emphasised the importance of maintaining law and order for continued growth.
She acknowledged global challenges such as the Ukraine-Russia conflict, sanctions, and the COVID-19 pandemic contributing to inflation and increased import costs.
The Prime Minister reiterated her call for self-sufficiency by increasing domestic production of essential items. She emphasized the need for investment in special economic zones and the development of a skilled workforce to support economic growth.
Upon her arrival at the event, the Prime Minister received a guard of honour.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Director General (DG) of RAB M Khurshid Hossain also addressed the gathering.
A documentary showcasing recent RAB activities was screened during the programme.
