Beat the heat during load-shedding

SHUVRO SAIF | Wednesday, 7 June 2023

The biggest buzzword in Bangladesh right now is load-shedding. While heatwaves are sweeping across the country, fuel shortage originating from the dollar crisis has forced several big energy producers to shut down operations. As a result, load-shedding has increased manifolds leading to public suffering.
As the weather seems unforgiving, we must devise ways to stay cool in our residents without just depending on electricity. Here's your checklist for that.
Natural ventilation: During load-shedding, maximise natural ventilation by strategically opening windows and doors to create cross ventilation. Positioning fans near the windows will help circulate the air, promoting a cooling breeze throughout your home. Take advantage of cooler evenings or early morning hours to allow fresh air to enter your living spaces.
Optimise window treatments: Invest in thermal or blackout curtains to block out direct sunlight and reduce heat gain. Keeping these curtains closed during peak sunlight hours to prevent the sun's rays from heating your rooms is efficient. Consider installing reflective window films or shades to minimise heat transfer further.
Create shade: Shield your home from the sun's intense rays by installing awnings, outdoor blinds, or window shades. Exterior shading can significantly reduce solar heat gain and keep your home cooler. Planting trees and shrubs around your property can also provide a natural shade, thereby reducing the temperature indoors.
Maximise ceiling and portable fans: Ceiling fans are incredibly effective in creating a cooling effect by circulating air in your home. Portable fans can be strategically placed throughout your home to enhance air circulation and keep it fresh so the temperature does not increase during load-shedding.
Cooling techniques: Take advantage of simple and effective cooling techniques when you face frequent load-shedding. Wetting a towel or sheet and hanging it in front of an open window can create a refreshing breeze as the wind passes through. Placing bowls of ice in front of fans also helps to cool the air blown into the room. A shower is always a good option for immediate relief from heat-related stress. You can rub your body with a wet towel as well.
Insulate your home: Ensure your home is well-insulated to prevent heat transfer. Insulation helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature and keeps the heat out during load-shedding. Seal any gaps or cracks around windows, doors, and walls to minimise air leakage, which can help retain cool air inside your home. This works if you have air conditioning devices, as you would be able to sustain the cool temperature for some time after the electricity is gone.
Hydration and personal cooling: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Use handheld fans or misting sprays to cool yourself down. Dress in light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen to enhance comfort.
