RANGPUR, Nov 12: Bee farming is gaining popularity in Dinajpur, Thakurgaon Panchogarh and other parts of Rangpur district, sources said.
According to sources many farmers have been involved in this profession as it is more lucrative than agriculture
Official sources of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) in Dinajpur said around 250-300 tonnes of honey is collected in this region every year. They said the quantity will increase as more farmers are turning to the profession in the region.
But the collectors have problems in preservation and marketing. They supply the honey to the traders at low prices as they do not have any processing and preservation facilities, they added.
Some NGO have taken laudable steps to make people interested in this occupation. BRAC has trained several hundred people in bee farming so far and provided them with equipments, sources of BRAC said.
