Beefing up city's security during Eid holidays

Thursday, 19 March 2026

Dhaka city has become unusually quiet as a large number of city dwellers left the city to celebrate Eid with their families in their hometowns. After evening, many streets and alleys turn almost deserted. During Eid, many residential areas become nearly empty, creating opportunities for criminal groups.
Experience shows that some criminals take advantage of this situation. With many flats and houses left unoccupied, incidents of theft, burglary and mugging tend to increase. In previous years, reports of break-ins and other crimes in empty homes during the Eid holidays have appeared in the media. Therefore, the concerns of city residents are not unfounded.
In such a situation, it is essential for law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant. Increasing police patrols, strengthening surveillance in residential neighbourhoods, monitoring suspicious movements and expanding CCTV coverage can play an important role in preventing crime. Community awareness and cooperation with local authorities can also help ensure safety.
