Being prudent in power usage
Monday, 15 May 2023
Load-shedding in most parts of Bangladesh is now a common affair. We are now facing power outage every day in sweltering heat. Power outage has returned to Dhaka city with rural areas experiencing hours-long unannounced power cuts. According to official sources, Bangladesh Power Development Board had to resort to about 2,051 megawatt loadshedding yesterday, when power generation was 10,749 MW against a demand for 12,800 MW.
The regular occurrence of load-shedding creates many problems and hinders the socio-economic development of the country. Domestic life becomes a painful ordeal for this. Sometimes medical tests cannot be done without electricity. In fact, the importance of regular supply of power at every turn of our modern-day living cannot be overemphasised.
Summer is a difficult time for us when requirement for power goes up by manifold in excess of our generation capacity. Industrial production and other economic activities suffer due to poor supply of power. The issue of electricity production has become a priority for us without which we cannot expect to achieve the desired economic growth in the country. We should save power as much as possible. On the other hand, the management of our energy sector should be strengthened to match the growing demand for power. The government should encourage people to save power and be prudent in power usage.
