KHULNA, Nov 25: Production at section-1 of Bengal Textile Mills has been suspended from Saturday as the contract period of service charge was expired.
Bengal Textile Mill was set up in Avoynagor of Jessore District in 1961 with two sections. This is the first time the mill is closed since its operation.
A total of 660 workers and employees have become jobless and facing a hardship with their families prior to the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
Source said the contract period of service charge between the mill authority and the contracting firm 'Cosmopolitan' had been expired last Friday.
However, the contractor did not renew its contract as the price of the manufactured thread has fallen in the local and international markets. At this, the mill authority stopped the supply of raw material cotton and the production had been finally closed Saturday.
Israfil, Mansura, Jesmin, Shariful and Amjad, workers of the mill, said that they are frustrated at the closure of the mill and they cannot protest against the mill authority for the present situation of the country.
General Manager Abdul Hannan said he tried to run the mill by appointing a new contractor on service charge basis but there was no response from any party. He also said that all the dues of workers and employees have been paid.
