Berger Paints Bangladesh has planned to install a mineral turpentine oil (MTO) manufacturing plant having the production capacity of 15,000 tonnes per year.
The company has recently submitted a proposal to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) to establish the condensate-based MTO plant, a senior EMRD official said.
Currently, Berger uses the MTO from the state-owned Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL) as the raw material for manufacturing all types of paints.
With the MTO the Berger Paints is planning to enhance its paints production capacity substantially and market it for use by other paint manufacturing companies for use as the raw material.
Berger Paints will require around 50,000 tonnes of condensate for manufacturing the said quantity of MTO.
The ERL currently produces around 15,000 tonnes of MTO from condensate as per the requirements of three government-owned oil-marketing companies - Padma, Jamuna and Meghna - for selling to the paint manufacturing companies including Berger, Romana and Elite.
When contacted the ERL managing director Rezaul Alam said production of MTO by his company is hampering its core function -- refining of crude oil.
"It would be beneficial for the ERL if the company does not require manufacturing MTO," he told the FE Monday.
