Bet on Bangladesh as a secure investment place

FE Report | Thursday, 26 March 2015

Bangladesh Wednesday projected itself as a new frontier market and a secure place to invest.
The promotional pitch was made by Executive Chairman of Board of Investment (BoI) Dr Syed Abdus Samad at the Asian Investment Conference, who invited investors to bet on capital, considering the country a 'dreamland' for investors.
Speaking as a keynote speaker on 'When will frontier markets prove rewarding to investors? Panel,' he also highlighted the country's potential as an investment destination.
The five-day conference, organised by Credit Suisse, began in Hong Kong Monday, participated by investors from corporate houses, institutions and hedge funds from across the world.
The BoI executive head is representing Bangladesh in the 18th conference, accompanied by Consul General of Bangladesh in Hong Kong Mohammad Sarwar Mahmood, the ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.
Dr Samad said Bangladesh is included on the frontier markets list with other 35 countries and highlighted Standard & Poor's stable rating, national industrial policy and World Bank 'Doing Business report 2014' that recognise the country's potential.
He said the industrial policy recognises the private sector as engine growth and allows 100 percent foreign equity with no upper ceiling for foreign investors or performance requirement but equal treatment for both local and foreign investment.
He said under Public private Partnership (PPP), some 42 projects with approximate outlay of around US$ 14 billion are now various stages of implementation.
The country's foreign direct investment (FDI) that started with a moderate US$701 million in 2009 reached to US$1.6 billion in 2013, he added.
Stating World Bank's 'Doing Business report 2014' that Bangladesh is the : 2nd easiest place in the region to do business, 2nd in the region on 'starting a business', 1st in region on 'protecting investors', 1st in region on 'ease of paying tax', the BoI executive chairman said investment in Bangladesh is secure vis-à-vis nationalisation and expropriation.
