Better air quality

Saturday, 4 April 2020

Amid the collective fight of nations against the Covid-19, there is a good piece of news - level of air pollution has come down in major cities around the world and Dhaka is not any exception. When experts and policymakers were struggling to find out any effective means to reduce air pollution, the improvement is understandably the result of the lockdown that has brought a halt in movement of transports, suspension in operations of some industries and also movement of people.
Now, the authorities concerned should take lessons from the situation. Almost all people abide by health rules and maintain maximum caution including cleanliness and social distancing to prevent the Covid-19 spread. So, there is a scope to improve civic behaviour in terms of health and hygiene under normal circumstances. The environmental good practices being followed now need to be continued in the coming days. Still, there will be other problems that would pollute the air most, which need to be addressed effectively. We all have some responsibility to contribute to improvement in the environment.
