The government's apex forum on building better business atmosphere sits today (Monday) to discuss the entire gamut of the country's trade, commerce and investment activities after budget proposal for the next fiscal year, a senior official said Sunday.

He said a total of 45 senior public and private sector high-ups will partake the meeting of the Bangladesh Better Business Forum (BBBF) with Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed in the chair.

Against the backdrop of critical situations in local and international economy and trade, the forum was formed in November last to maintain 'favourable' and 'suitable relations' between the government and the private sector.

"Though there is some fixed agenda on the cards for discussion, but it is expected that a number of contemporary issues including power, gas and liquidity crisis, which are key concern of the business community, will dominate the meeting," the senior official said.

He said the 4th meeting of the BBBF, two months after its 3rd meet on April 23, is providing an opportunity to the heralds of the private sector to present hurdles facing the business community before the head of the caretaker government directly.

Chief of the country's apex trade body said there would be discussion on contemporary issues that are creating hurdles to the growth of the country's trade, commerce and investment.

"Current issues will come on the table while discussing the recommendations of the working groups in the BBBF meeting," President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Annisul Huq told the FE Sunday.

In line with the decision of the first meeting of the BBBF in December last, the government on January 13 formed five working groups on skills development, infrastructure, business finance, macro economic policy, and business entry and operation with instruction to formulate right sorts of recommendation to remove the obstacles hindering growth in various potential sectors.

However, a business leader who is also one of 41 members of the committee of the BBBF said implementation process of the recommendations made by the working groups is very slow.

"Every issue on the agenda to be tabled for discussion at the forum should have a timeframe, so that the problems in the business sector could be resolved without any dilemma," he said.

According to an official, some 28 out of 56 decisions made by the BBBF based on the recommendations of the working group have so far been implemented.

President of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association Fazlul Hauque said: "We will try to raise the gas issue, which is now the prime concern of the country's 4,000 RMG manufactures."

"We hope that the meeting of the BBBF with Chief Adviser in the chair will help mobilising the entire economic activities of the country," he said.

The government formed BBBF, the country's first-ever public-private business forum, to improve interaction between the business community and the government high-ups with a secretariat attached with the Board of Investment (BoI) under the supervision of the CA's office.

The finance and planning adviser has been made executive chairperson of the BBBF, while the executive chairman of Board of Investment (BOI) its member-secretary.
