BFDC takes up three projects

Md Mazadul Hoque Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) is set to take up three projects at a cost of Tk 2.81 billion across the country aiming to develop the country's fisheries sector and boost export. "If the projects are implemented, fish export would increase and the local fisheries sector would flourish," Chairman of BFDC Khurshida Khatoon said. Under one project, the state-run corporation will establish five fish landing centres with ancillary facilities at five selected areas at a cost of Tk 0.5 billion, the official said. He said the projects areas are Mohipur-Alipur of Patuakhali, Pirerhat of Pirojpur, Ramghati of Laxmipur and Rajshahi. Apart from fish landing centers, the official said fish preserving and fish marketing centers for traders would be set up. Warehouse facilities and ice supply for traders would also be extended under this project and ice factories in Patuakhali, Pirojpur would also be built, the official said. Another project titled 'Strengthening BFDC' and developing fish marketing network was taken at a cost of Tk 2.18 billion in 10 districts across the country, the official said. The project would help deliver formalin-free fish at the doorsteps of the people in Dhaka city with BFDC'S own transport, the official said. The official said 'BMRE of Fish Processing and Marketing Centres at Pagla and Mongla project at a cost of Tk 0.13 billion has been undertaken where fish would be processed for export in different countries. The BFDC, established in 1964, helps to harvest fisheries resources and develop marketing facilities. BFDC has established fish habour, landing and distribution centres, ice plants and processing plants.
