BGB seizes Tk 650.53m smuggled goods in Jan

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered contraband items, including drugs, worth about Tk 650.53 million in the country in January. Sources at the BGB headquarters said they arrested 113 people on charge of smuggling during the period. Meanwhile, 136 Bangladeshi and eight Indian nationals were detained for trespass. A total of 500 Myanmar nationals were also sent back to Myanmar after arrest by BGB men from Bangladesh territory. Besides, the border guards seized 33,765 bottles of Indian Phensidyl syrup; 1,52,328 sex stimulating Yaba tablets, 23,311 bottles of foreign liquor, 1,192 liters of local liquor, 8,314 cans of beer, 787 kgs of hemp, and 555 grams of heroin during the same period. According to the sources, a total of 2,159 cases were filed with different police stations across the country in connection with the recovery of the smuggled goods. Of the smuggled goods, Tk 620.17 million goods were seized while being smuggled into the country and Tk 30.16 million goods while being smuggled out of the country. The BGB members also rescued 68 women and 9 children while they were being trafficked to neighbouring India during the period, according to UNB.
