BGBA election on March 2

FE REPORT | Monday, 19 February 2024

Election to the Bangla-desh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA) will be held on March 2 for the 2024-26 term.
Kazi Iftequer Hossain, panel leader of the council that is contesting the upcoming BGBA polls, introduced candidates at a press conference in a city hotel on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Hossain, also former president of the BGBA, said foreign apparel buyers are now focusing more on Bangladesh due to various global facts, including the ongoing Myanmar conflict and buyers China plus strategy.
"In recent months, buyers' queries have increased on the rate of placing orders," he said.
Citing the Red Sea crisis issue, he said there are still challenges as buyers might further reduce the price of apparel due to a hike in freight costs followed by a long transition time.
He, however, stressed the need for collective measures to address the issue.
He also demanded recognition of BGBA members as trade exporters, saying some 1,500 registered members contribute about $8.0 billion to earning the country's total RMG exports to $47 billion.
Out of the 1,500 members of the organisation, some 600 are currently active in the business, he noted.
Former BGBA general secretary Aminul Islam, among others, was present at the conference.
