Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS) has been renamed 'Jatiya Chhatra Shakti' and has now officially become the student wing of the National Citizen Party (NCP).
The organigation, once known as an independent student organisation, will henceforth operate under the NCP's leadership and ideology.
The announcement came on Thursday (October 23) evening during a national coordination meeting held at Abu Sayeed Convention Hall, near InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka.
The event titled "Reorganisation of the Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad and Determining Future Political Strategy," was attended by top NCP leaders. However, no new central committee for the reorganised group was announced.
Among those present were NCP Member-Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Chief Organizer (South) Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer (North) Sarjis Alam, Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adib, BGCS Central Convener Abu Baker Majumdar, and Member-Secretary Zahid Ahsan.
Speaking at the event, NCP Member-Secretary Akhtar Hossain said, "The July Charter must be implemented at any cost. The NCP will only sign when its full implementation is guaranteed."
He further stated, "After the signing, two factions have emerged, one wants to withdraw the signature, and the other wants to seal it permanently."
Akhtar also urged students to remain vigilant, saying, "We must ensure that no one turns student dormitories into political control rooms or guest rooms again."
It may be noted that BGCS was formed on February 26 this year at Dhaka University's Madhur Canteen by coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which played a central role in the July Uprising.
At the time of its launch, the organisation declared its guiding slogan, "Student First, Bangladesh First", and pledged to avoid partisan loyalty while ensuring internal democracy in leadership elections.
However, the group's candidates failed to make a mark in recent student union elections at four universities, leading to speculation about its dissolution. The latest development marks its reemergence, this time as Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, aligned with the NCP.
