BGMEA, BKMEA call for revoking gas tariff hike

Monday, 3 August 2009

FE Report
The country's ready-made garment manufacturers Sunday urged the government to withdraw its decision to raise gas tariffs.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) made the call in separate press statements.
The government increased domestic and industrial gas tariffs as per the directives of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), effective from August 01, excepting for compressed natural gas.
"The decision is not time befitting, we want that the decision be immediately withdrawn," BGMEA press said.
"We urged the government to scrap the decision relating to the increase in gas tariff for the time being," BKMEA press release added.
Both the BGMEA and the BKMEA in their statements said the decision will have negative impacts on their respective sectors as they are facing many challenges in the wake of global financial crisis.
