BGMEA clarifies statement on bailout package

The country's apex apparel body has clarified its statement made at a press conference earlier Thursday saying that it created misunderstanding sparking sharp criticisms.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in a board meet -ing Sunday clarified that it wanted a bailout package worth Tk 30 billion (3,000 million) from the government to pay wages and bonuses to their workers.
The meeting said the association got assurance of the government about the bailout package several times and it Thursday sought just implementation of the decision as soon as possible, said a press release.
The press statement said the government is sympathetic to the apparel sector and they expect that the government will implement its pledge about the stimulus package shortly.
It also said the apparel sector has been facing crisis since the outset of the economic recession and the export growth was negative in the last two months.
The statement said cooperation among banks, owners and workers is needed to overcome the crisis.
It also said: "We want to have a good relation with the government based on sympathy and pledge to resolve the crisis in cooperation with workers and manufacturers."
